POSITION PURPOSE
The Hospitalist will manage patients through the continuum of hospital care, seeing patients and following them into the critical care unit and organizing post-acute care.  The Hospitalist will coordinate the medical care or other services provided by various health care professionals and others, to those who receive medical or other care, or services at the Hospital.  The Hospitalist will order treatments, tests and consults with specialty physicians and primary care physician where appropriate.  The Hospitalist shall exemplify South Peninsula Hospital’s Values & Behaviors in all of their interactions with staff, patients and community members. The Hospitalist may provide recommendations and suggestions to the Hospital on how to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness at the Hospital in connection with the delivery of Hospitalist services.  The Hospitalist agrees to make meaningful use of electronic health records; to be willing to work with Allied Health Professionals and other Hospital employees as part of care teams for patient care; and to perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer. The Hospitalist may also be asked to provide community education on a periodic basis. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION, ACCOUNTABILITY/REPORTING STRUCTURE

Quality Improvement
  • Maintain personal knowledge of State and Federal regulations requirements and standards for the Department and assure compliance with same.
  • Resolve patient care problems in the Department.
  • Physician shall participate in Hospital’s risk management, continuing medical education, quality assurance, utilization review, peer review, and other programs conducted by the Hospital as required by Medical Staff Bylaws.

 Education

  • Participate in appropriate training program for Hospital and Department nursing and other support personnel.
Program Planning and Development
  • Work with Department’s Manager in planning appropriate patient treatment protocols.
Financial and Data Management
  • Participating in appropriate Medical Staff utilization review activities.
  • Ensure medical records and other reports of patients are completed in a timely fashion to meet Hospital and Medical Staff requirements.
  • Physician may make recommendations to the Hospital with respect to the establishment and purchase of facilities, supplies and equipment necessary for the proper operation of the Hospitalist services at the Hospital.
  • Physician shall participate in such managed care plans, as Hospital may direct, respecting reimbursement issues.
Medical Staff Relations
  • Work actively to promote positive relations with other clinical departments and the Medical Staff at large.
  • Participate in appropriate Hospital and Medical Staff committees.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Examines, diagnoses, and treats hospitalized patients.

  • Orders treatments, tests, and consults with specialty physicians and primary care physician where appropriate.
  • Physician shall exemplify South Peninsula Hospital’s Values & Behaviors in all of their interactions with staff, patients and community members.
  • Physician may provide recommendations and suggestions to the Hospital on how to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness at the Hospital in connection with the delivery of Hospitalist services.
  • Physician agrees to make meaningful use of electronic health records; to be willing to work with Allied Health Professionals and other Hospital employees as part of care teams for patient care; and to perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of an accredited four-year U.S. medical school or its equivalent.
  • Board certified in Family Practice or Internal Medicine, or Board eligible within two years of appointment to Hospital’s Medical Staff.
  • Current Alaska State License to practice Medicine.
  • Approval by Hospital’s Medical Staff and Board of Directors to practice with appropriate privileges.

Work Hours:

Varied 8-10 hr shifts on days/weekends, nights on call
