The HIM Supervisor is a leadership role within the Health Information Management Department. The major purpose of this position is to support and assist the Revenue Cycle Director in regards to all personnel and scheduling requirements. The HIM Supervisor, working closely with the Revenue Cycle Director will coordinate all communication, evaluations, disciplinary action and schedules as they pertain to the staff of the HIM Department. The HIM Supervisor is responsible for ensuring all records are coded in a timely manner and to the highest specificity using ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines, South Peninsula Hospital policy and State and Federal requirements and regulations.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This is an exempt management position covered under the personnel policies of Non-Union Employee Handbook. The incumbent may be required to work more than forty hours per week. The individual in this position understands and supports the overall goals of the administration of the hospital and manages the resources and activities of the Health Information Management Department to assist in accomplishing the hospital’s goals. The HIM Supervisor must be self-directed; be able to work with minimal supervision; and be willing to accept the responsibility of assisting with the administering of the department. The HIM Supervisor, working directly with the Revenue Cycle Director, assists with developing and implementing policies and procedures for the operation of the department; and works harmoniously with other departments of the hospital to improve and strengthen the operation of the entire hospital. The HIM Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations to include paper and electronic chart assembly and analysis, release of information, file room, scanning and indexing, charge capture, coding, transcription and date submission to various registries. The HIM Supervisor reports to the Revenue Cycle Director and serves as a liaison with all other hospital departments, as well as community agencies where appropriate.
South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed acute care and 28 bed long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The environment is generally pleasant, is clean and well maintained. The position requires walking, sitting for prolonged periods, stooping, and standing. Generally, physical demands are light and most work is performed inside. Working hours may fluctuate based on the demands of the work.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
- A two-year Associate of Applied Science degree or completion of the AHIMA independent study programs is preferred.
- Must possess RHIT, RHIA, CIC or CCS. A minimum of two years coding experience in an acute care hospital setting. Possess in-depth knowledge of coding/classification systems appropriate for inpatient and outpatient services. These include, but are not limited to, diagnostic medicine, emergency room, outpatient surgery, observation, general medicine/surgery, dental, orthopedics, obstetrics and newborn.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Incumbent must also be able to manage multiple concurrent tasks with exceptional organizational skills. The position requires keyboarding skills, and knowledge of various computer applications including, but not limited to: word processing, spreadsheets, databases and graphic presentation software. Must be able to operate general office machines including personal computer, FAX machine and photocopier.
- Knowledge and experience of DFNB, NCCI, charge capture, chart assembly/analysis, transcription, information privacy laws, access, and release of information is essential. Ability in business math and basic statistical analysis is required for data compilation, analysis and presentation of conclusions. The incumbent must be able to deal courteously and tactfully with patients, visitors and physicians; explain policy and procedure to patients and their families; follow established departmental policies and procedures; maintain accurate records; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and contribute to a pleasant, positive working environment.
