ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ACUTE CARE SERVICES (PCN 989)

The Assistant Director of Acute Care Services serves in a supporting role and reports to the Director of Acute Care Services. This position provides guidance and leadership to the Acute Care, OB, and Emergency Departments by helping to manage the day-to-day operations and staff scheduling as well as monitors and ensures education and training requirements are met. The Assistant Director of Acute Care Services works closely with the Director of Acute Care Services in coordinating all communication, evaluations, projects, committees, disciplinary actions, and schedules. The incumbent will be a vital role model to exemplify South Peninsula Hospital’s mission and core values and serves as a liaison to all other hospital departments, internal and external customers, and community agencies where appropriate.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This is an exempt management position covered under the personnel policies of the Non-Union Employee Handbook. The individual in this position understands and supports the overall goals of the hospital’s administration and helps manage the resources and activities of Acute Care, OB, and the Emergency Department. The Assistant Director of Acute Care Services must be self-directed and highly reliable; able to work with minimal supervision; and willing to accept the responsibility of assisting with the operational and administrative needs of Acute Care, OB, and Emergency Departments. The incumbent will support the development and implementation of policies and procedures as directed. The Assistant Director of Acute Care Services will also engage in safety and quality improvement initiatives and reply to customer service requests in accordance with state, federal, and local regulations as well as the hospital’s Patient-Centered Care and Quality Improvement Program. The incumbent will work to foster professional, collaborative relationships with other hospital departments to improve and strengthen the operational performance of the entire facility. The Assistant Director of Acute Care Services will assist in the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Acute Care, OB, and Emergency Departments to include, but not limited to: care coordination with charge nurse to ensure appropriate staffing and skills mix for all three departments, support requests and efforts to provide staff with education and training opportunities, and utilize staffing resources effectively to meet the acuities and care needs of the units.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Must possess a current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Alaska.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
- Must maintain current certifications: BLS, ACLS and PALS
- A minimum of 3-5 years of nursing experience required.
- Nurse supervisory experience is preferred.
- Administrative experience, scheduling experience, and or human resources experience is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of Word programs, spreadsheets, budget development/monitoring, and the collective bargaining agreement are preferred.
- Effective speaking, listening, problem-solving, and writing skills are required to communicate with professional staff, to direct the work activity within the department, and to communicate with personnel at all levels.
- Mathematical ability is required for time card and productivity analysis, budget preparation, statistical analyses and other operational activities.
South Peninsula Hospital is a 22 bed Critical Access Hospital with a Level 4 Trauma designation and a 28-bed Long Term Care facility and is located on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The Acute Care Unit is a Multi-Specialty Medical-Surgical Unit with, orthopedic/spine, Step-Down, Swing Bed, Respiratory Therapies, Outpatient Observation, ICU/CCU, e-ICU/Tele Stroke, Tele-Psychiatry, and the Family Birthing Center specialties. The working environment is friendly, welcoming, highly collaborative, and supportive. Persons in this position are potentially exposed to infectious diseases, including all types of contact, droplet, airborne, and blood borne pathogens. The physical demands of this position are generally light and most work is performed indoors.
