RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and maintain a sterile field and surgical instruments during invasive and non-invasive procedures.
- Anticipate surgeon’s needs and provide necessary tools and assistance throughout the operation.
- Act as a second assisting surgical technologist and perform technical tasks under surgeon supervision.
- Occasionally perform sterile processing duties, including cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilizing surgical instruments.
- Maintain surgical safety standards and ensure functionality of all necessary equipment and supplies.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required; graduate of an accredited surgical technology program.
- Active Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential required, with continued certification through CE or retesting every 4 years.
- Current BLS certification (or willing to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- At least 2 years of operating room experience preferred.
- Strong eye-hand coordination, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure.
- Skilled in multitasking and switching between diverse technical duties.
- Strong understanding of patient safety, privacy, and sterile technique.
- Physical Requirement: Must have the ability to move frequently, use fine motor skills, work accurately with detailed equipment, and maintain stamina during extended procedures.
ENVIRONMENT:
This position is located in the surgical unit at South Peninsula Hospital, a 40-bed facility offering both acute and long-term care services in the beautiful town of Homer, Alaska. The surgical suite includes two operating rooms and requires flexibility, teamwork, and a readiness to respond to emergency procedures.
Working hours may vary, and on-call shifts are required, especially for urgent or after-hours procedures.
Job hazards include exposure to bloodborne pathogens, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, and high-stress environments, requiring strict adherence to safety and infection control protocols.
