CHIEF NURSING OFFICER (REQ 4041)

POSITION PURPOSE
The primary purpose of this position is to provide well-organized patient-care services (including nursing) with a plan of administrative authority and delineation of responsibilities to ensure the appropriate coordination and utilization of staff and other resources to deliver high-quality patient care in an efficient manner. The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), working under the general direction of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), provides leadership, coordination and administration in planning, organizing, and managing human, material and fiscal resources for the nursing division. The CNO actively participates in planning and operational decisions to ensure the integration and coordination of patient-care activities across the continuum of care. The CNO supports South Peninsula Hospital’s commitment to the highest standards of business and professional ethics and will role model SPH’s values and expected behaviors. The CNO will take administrator-on-duty (AOD) call in rotation with Senior Management Team (SMT) members and participate in SPH’s Emergency Management Team planning and associated response to these events as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

• The position of CNO requires a Bachelor’s degree in nursing,
• A current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Alaska.
• A minimum of five to seven years of experience as a CNO in an acute-care hospital setting is preferred.
• A combination of experience and education may be considered to in lieu of education requirements. 
• Excellent communication skills to include influencing for positive outcomes and change as well the ability to demonstrate effective and efficient progress to plan.
• Experience building and sustaining collaborative relationship with medical and general staff.
• Extensive experience in budget preparation and productivity reviews and cost analyses.
• The CNO must have a thorough knowledge of the concepts of Continuous Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and be able to supervise the Quality Improvement activities of subordinate departments.

RESPONSIBILITY
The CNO reports to the CEO. The CNO directs, organizes, staffs, supervises and controls all nursing and assigned support departments for South Peninsula Hospital, including: Acute Care Services, Long-Term Care, Surgical Services and Home-Health Services Departments as well as Quality and Risk. The incumbent participates in the development and implementation of the hospital’s goals with a particular focus of patient care. The CNO develops patient-care goals and objectives in support of the hospital goals and coordinates the activities of the patient-care department managers to accomplish those goals. The CNO is responsible for the operation of assigned patient-care services, including determining the types and numbers of staff necessary to provide patient care for these areas throughout the hospital.
