The Clinical Forensic Services (CFS) registered nurse will ensure the provision of high quality, safe, effective and efficient nursing services to patients/victims of violence. This Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is responsible for responding to abuse and/or assault victims or suspects by providing quality patient care and forensic evidence collection. The FNE integrates activities with other hospital departments, law enforcement agencies, child protective services, victim advocacy, prosecution, community health care professionals and the public.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The CFS FNE reports to the CFS Coordinator. The FNE works with patients and family members across the lifespan, neonates, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly and appropriate members of the health care team and/or community agencies. The FNE knows the consequences of nursing actions and the legalities involved.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and/or Experience: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing; current R.N. licensure in the State of Alaska; BLS trained; a passing score on the nurse pharmacology test; a minimum of three years recent acute care hospital experience; one year recent emergency department experience or experience in caring for victims of assault/abuse preferred; successful completion of a SANE certification course (a 40 hour classroom program); successful completion of an approved child maltreatment course (a 32 hour classroom program); successful completion of the adult and pediatric preceptorship requirements; have knowledge of the principles and theory underlying nursing procedures and interventions performed; possess advanced physical assessment skills; familiarity with legal, ethical and medical issues related to assault and/or abuse of children and adults.

South Peninsula Hospital is a 22 bed critical access hospital (CAH) located on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. There is a 28 bed long term care facility attached to the hospital.
The Emergency Department (ED) consists of a 9-bed unit with a joined 2-room trauma suite, and central station. The FNE room is located right outside the ED in room 201.
