POSITION PURPOSE:
The primary functions of the Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS) are to champion the electronic health record (EHR) application and other clinical-based systems, train and provide technical support to the staff and providers, resolve process issues with the EHR, and streamline procedures to promote enhanced system functionality. This position is part of a team-based approach to providing patient-centered care. The incumbent understands the clinical support needs of the health information system (HIS), and has the technical knowledge to leverage the EHR to meet clinical and quality reporting requirements within the parameters of the software.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The CIS is instrumental in the day-to-day support and maintenance as well as ongoing improvements to the clinical systems. The CIS will guide processes and training to ensure success in quality programs. This position is responsible for conducting training for staff members and providers who utilize the facility's electronic health record systems and the integrated software. The position is a sensitive position where the incumbent has access to information stored on networked resources as well as on individual workstations. This includes privileged business, personal employee and protected patient information. This position is a salaried/exempt position covered under the personnel policies of the Non-Union Employee Handbook. The Clinical Informatics Specialist reports to the Director of Health Information Systems.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of three years' experience working in a computerized clinical system or other information systems environment with one year of recent experience in clinical informatics required.
- Informatics experience in a hospital environment preferred; alternate direct patient care and clinical applications experience considered.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or Informatics / Computer Systems is required.
- Experience working with Epic EHR platform is preferred.
- Project management experience is preferred.
- Self-directed with diverse clinical knowledge and highly developed problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
- Practical knowledge/experience of PC business software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications, is required.
- Demonstrated teaching skills are required.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. High attention to detail and producing quality work is essential for this position.
- Must be well-organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment and keep track of multiple tasks and projects.
- Must demonstrate efficient and accurate keyboarding and data entry skills.
ENVIRONMENT:
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed acute care hospital and 28-bed long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well-maintained. The position requires a moderate amount of mobility. The ability to reason, speak and have basic manual dexterity is essential. There may be the need to attend meetings and classes both inside and outside the hospital setting. Physical demands are moderate and may include sitting for prolonged periods, standing, walking, stooping and occasional lifting. Psychological demands can be strenuous. Most work is performed inside, and the work is generally of a positive nature.
