POSITION PURPOSE:
This position, under the immediate supervision of the Laboratory Director is also supervised by the Medical Director when appropriate. This is a lead position within the Point of Care department. Responsibilities will be performed in a team-oriented environment, with the following goals:
Scope of responsibility:
- Work closely with other laboratory employees, the Laboratory Director and Medical Director in order to maintain and enhance patient care services of South Peninsula Hospital.
- Perform in all areas involved in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic testing in the laboratory. Performs testing of high and moderate complexity levels according to established procedures.
- Adhere to quality control policies and perform proficiency testing competently.
- Follows policies related to safety, infection control and chemical hygiene; requires a basic understanding of regulatory requirements as established by the various regulatory agencies such as CLIA, and OSHA.
- Relate and communicate competently and professionally with the supervisors and staff of other departments, physicians and patients as an official representative of the laboratory and hospital.
- As lead of point of care department: stay abreast of best practice testing and incorporate findings into the point of care test menu. Responsible for providing point of care department continuing education opportunities through use of annual budgetary allowance. Create and annually review policies and procedures for the point of care department. Oversee maintenance procedures and records, quality control procedures and records, perform monthly audit for compliance and present findings of audit to the laboratory director on point of care department. Responsible for bi-annual chemistry/POC analyzer correlations and linearity studies. Responsible for management of inventory; maintain sufficient supplies for a two month testing period. Perform annual quality improvement study(s) to improve quality and patient outcomes. Responsible for training of clinical laboratory staff for performance of new or revised test procedures. Will collaborate with the technical coordinator to provide training documents for new clinical laboratory scientist orientation.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor or Associates Degree or equivalent in Clinical Laboratory Science
- National Registry as Clinical Laboratory Scientist ( CLS) by ASCP or equivalent
- Successful completion of registry exam for Clinical Laboratory Scientist
- Minimum of 5 years full-time experience, with experience in all clinical departments preferable.
- Satisfactory performance evaluations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Computer skills and knowledge in Word Processing Suite.
- Knowledge of state laboratory licensing requirements, federal CLIA regulations and national accreditation standards.
- Delegate effectively.
- Resolve interdepartmental issues that do not require the Laboratory Director’s intervention in a professional manner.
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed Acute care hospital and 28 bed long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained. The position requires a moderate amount of mobility. The ability to reason, speak and have basic manual dexterity is essential. There may be the need to attend meetings and classes both inside and outside of the Hospital setting. Physical demands are moderate and may include sitting for prolonged periods, standing, walking, stooping and occasional lifting. Psychological demands can be strenuous. Most work is performed inside and the work is generally of a positive nature.
