CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST - HEMATOLOGY LEAD (REQ 3839)

POSITION PURPOSE:

This position, under the immediate supervision of the Laboratory Director is also supervised by the Medical Director when appropriate.  This is a lead position within the Hematology department. Responsibilities will be performed in a team-oriented environment, with the following goals:

Scope of responsibility:

• Work closely with other laboratory employees, the Laboratory Director and Medical Director in order to maintain and enhance patient care services of South Peninsula Hospital.
• Performs in all areas involved in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic testing in the laboratory. Performs testing of high and moderate complexity levels according to established procedures.
• Adhere to quality control policies and perform proficiency testing competently.
• Follows policies related to safety, infection control and chemical hygiene; requires a basic understanding of regulatory requirements as established by the various regulatory agencies such as CLIA and OSHA.
• Relate and communicate competently and professionally with the supervisors, staff, physicians and patients as an official representative of the laboratory and hospital.
• As a lead of hematology group:
  • Stay abreast of best practice testing and incorporate findings into the hematology test menu.
  • Responsible for providing hematology department continuing education opportunities through use of annual budgetary allowance.
  • Create and annually review policies and procedures for the hematology department.
  • Oversee maintenance procedures and records, quality control procedures and records, perform monthly audit for compliance and present finding of audit to the laboratory director.
  • Responsible for bi-annual hematology analyzer corrections, annual INR calculation on coagulation analyzer, and calibration of hematology and coagulation analyzers.
  • Responsible for submitting of QC data and review of peer data for hematology department.
  • Responsible for management of inventory; maintain sufficient supplies for a two-month testing period.
  • Perform annual quality improvement study(s) to improve quality and patient outcomes.
  • Responsible for training of clinical laboratory staff for performance of new and revised test procedures.
  • Will collaborate with the technical coordinator to provide training documents for new clinical laboratory scientist orientation.
  • Back-up of patient data for retrieval purposes. 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor degree or equivalent in Clinical Laboratory Science
2. National Registry as Clinical Laboratory Scientist ( CLS) by ASCP or equivalent
3. Successful completion of registry exam for Clinical Laboratory Scientist
4. Minimum of 5 years full-time experience, with experience in all clinical departments preferable.
5. Satisfactory performance evaluations
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
7. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
8. Computer skills and knowledge in Word Processing Suite.
9. Knowledge of state laboratory licensing requirements, federal CLIA regulations and national accreditation standards.
10. Delegate effectively.
11. Resolve interdepartmental issues that do not require the Laboratory Director’s intervention in a professional manner.
