CODER 2/CODING REIMBURSEMENT SPECIALIST (PCN 792)

The Reimbursement Specialist (Coder 2) reviews the contents of inpatient and ambulatory records identifying appropriate ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT codes to the highest specificity using appropriate coding guidelines, thus ensuring all coded records meet SPH, State and Federal requirements. Both inpatient and ambulatory coding is performed in a timely and accurate manner to meet ethical standards, compliance audits, and appropriate statistical and disease indices data collection requirements and for optimal reimbursement.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Medical Records Coder position requires the incumbent be at least 18 years of age with a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent along with at least 2 years of previous healthcare business experience. CPC credentialing. If credentials are absent, must be eligible or pending. Must have working knowledge and use of medical terminology and auditing and utilization review.
- A minimum of two-years coding experience preferably in an acute care hospital setting. Possess in-depth knowledge of coding/classification systems appropriate for inpatient and outpatient services. These include, but are not limited to, diagnostic medicine, emergency room, outpatient surgery, observation, general medicine/surgery, invasive radiology, orthopedics, obstetrics and newborn.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Incumbent must also be able to manage multiple concurrent tasks with exceptional organizational skills. The position requires keyboarding skills, and knowledge of coding computer applications. Must be able to operate general office machines including personal computer, FAX machine and photocopier.
South Peninsula Hospital is a 50 bed Critical Access and Long Term Care hospital, located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The South Peninsula Hospital has eighteen active Medical Staff members. Strict confidentiality is an essential component of this position. The HIMS department is a support service of SPH whose primary purpose is to contribute to the quality of patient care through the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, centralized health information system.
