POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the COO: directs, controls, organizes, staffs and supervises all Laboratory services including, but not limited to Chemistry, Microbiology, Hematology, Immunology, Blood Banking, Urinalysis, specimen processing and Phlebotomy.  Maintains quality control, Quality Improvement and other measures to comply with all regulatory requirements of the Laboratory. Complies with medical staff and hospital policies regarding laboratory services.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Requires the minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 5 years supervisory or lead Hospital laboratory services experience. 
  • A registrant in the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, or equivalent is preferred. 
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a Hospital Laboratory Technologist is also required. 
  • Good verbal and written communications, as well as positive social interactions with hospital staff, is necessary to effectively direct the work activity of the Laboratory and to communicate with personnel at all levels. 
  • Ability to critically think and manage hospital strategic mission and goals at the department level is required. 
  • If not already possessed, incumbent must be willing to learn and effectively perform tasks such as budget preparation, monitoring productivity, time card reconciliation and statistical analysis of department metrics. 

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH:

  • Regularly attends managers meetings, 1:1 meeting with COO, mandatory educational offerings, and general staff meetings.
  • Participates actively in the self-evaluation process, works with the COO to set goals for professional growth and works to attain those goals.
  • Strives to enhance management skills through attendance and application of SPH sponsored Leadership Development meetings, reading professional journals, attending seminars, 1:1 coaching with Internal or External coach, and through meaningful peer exchange. 
  • Is proactive in seeking out experiences and educational opportunities to expand management knowledge and experience.

ENVIRONMENT:

South Peninsula Hospital is a 20 bed acute care facility located on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula.  There is a 26 bed long term care facility attached to the hospital. The working environment is generally pleasant, is clean and well maintained.  The position requires a moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.  Persons in this position are exposed to infectious diseases, including all types of blood-borne pathogens, muscle diseases, including all types of blood-borne pathogens, muscle strains, falls, and needle stick injuries.  This person is occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and fumes or airborne particles, and frequently works near moving mechanical parts.  This position is occasionally exposed to risk of radiation or electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Generally, physical demands are light and most work is performed inside.  Work hours may be varied, but are generally during business hours Monday – Friday.
