POSITION PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) to facilitate patient care information and to perform limited patient-related duties under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) assigned to the ED. This position is part of a team-based approach in providing patient centered care by assisting in providing clerical support and pre-registration functions including answering phones, Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) documentation, chart reviews, audits, escort/transport of patients, admission and discharge of patients, and keeping ED cleaned and stocked.  All ED Techs are to be skilled in ED Tech competencies which can be utilized in other clinical areas at South Peninsula Hospital (SPH).


KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification. (Must obtain within the first 3 months)
  • Must know basic medical terminology.  Current Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) and/or current state EMT license.
  •  Health Care Specialist or ED Tech experience is preferred. One to two years of previous experience desirable.
  • Interpersonal communication skills to work with variety of staff and public.
  • Ability to work effectively under mental and emotional pressure of emergency situations.
  • Must have experience working with computers with keyboarding skills of 30 WPM and familiarity with and use of Microsoft Word.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member.

ENVIRONMENT:
South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed critical access hospital and 28 bed long-term care facility. The ED is a nine-bed unit, which provides emergency services 24 hours per day.  There are nine exam rooms including one large two-bed room set up for trauma and CODE situations.  The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained.  Most work is performed inside.  This position requires walking, standing for extended periods of time, sitting, bending, reaching, stooping, and the ability to lift 50 pounds without injury to self or others.  This position has a Category I Risk of exposure to bio-hazardous materials.  Persons in this position are exposed to infectious diseases, falls and muscle strains.  Working hours and days may fluctuate based on the demands of the department and hospital.
