POSITION PURPOSE:
Collaborates with team members to coordinate all unit activities and the flow of information between the Acute Care team and other departments and entities. Facilitates maximum reimbursement for patient services through accurate and complete registration of patients presenting for care.
NATURE & SCOPE:
The Health Unit Clerk (HUC) is well versed in registration and admitting procedures, computer systems, maintenance of the active medical record, credit and collection policies, and receptionist duties. The HUC is supervised by the Acute Care Director. This position provides support to the Acute Care, Patient Registration, Emergency, ICU, OB, and Surgery Departments as well as providing the admitting function for all types of patients. This position is an important key to customer service.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
- Must possess a High School diploma or GED.
- Medical Terminology (or completion of course within 90 days of hire – required)
- Must be able to read, write and speak English.
- Must have demonstrated good communication skills and legible handwriting.
- Must have at least two years of experience working with computers and have the ability to use word processing and spreadsheets.
- Demonstrated touch typing with minimum of 40 wpm.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member.
- One year experience in a health care or institutional setting with computerized hospital patient accounts preferred.
- Competency in the use of a standard photocopier, FAX machine, Zetafax and multi-line switchboard phone system.
ENVIRONMENT:
The Acute Care Department of South Peninsula Hospital is a 22 bed unit providing care to patients of all ages from birth to death. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained; most work is performed within the Acute Care department. The working environment is usually pleasant, but may occasionally become complicated with upset patients, family or staff and critical emergency situations. This position requires walking, sitting for extended periods of time, bending, reaching, stooping and the ability to lift 15 – 20 pounds on a rare occasion. Working hours and days may fluctuate based on the demands of the work.
