POSITION PURPOSE:

In addition to the roles of the CST, the Lead Certified Surgical Technician (CST) assists the Surgical Director by preparing, maintaining and anticipating the supply, instrument, and procedural needs for all surgical procedures. The Lead CST assists in the orientation and continuing education of staff in the surgery department. The Lead CST is competent to perform the roles of the Lead SPD Tech and the OR Purchasing Tech as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Lead CST requires an active certification.
  • Must possess, and maintain, a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Speaking, listening, the ability to move frequently from one task to another using several different skills, the ability to make decisions based on facts, the ability to use fingers and hands, the ability to work accurately with detail, good vision and eye-hand coordination are all required during the surgical experience.

Education/Job Criteria:

1. Graduate of a surgical technology program

2. Certified Surgical Technologist

3. CBSPD Certification (or become certified within 12 months)

4. Ability/willingness to perform OR Purchasing Tech role

5. A minimum of three years’ experience as a CST working in an OR environment is preferred

6. Active BLS certification, or obtained within 30 days of hire

7. Willingness to work flexible hours

8. Ability/willingness to take call

9. Willingness to assist in special projects as assigned

10. Demonstrated ability to maintain skills under extreme duress

11. Team Player

ENVIRONMENT:

South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 40 bed Acute Care and Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The surgery unit consists two general operating rooms and one endoscopy suite. The position requires standing for extended periods of time without a break, in bright, artificially lighted rooms. Persons in this position are exposed to infectious diseases, including various blood-borne pathogens, potential muscle strains, possible needle stick injuries, and exposure to anesthetic gases. Generally, physical demands are moderate, and all work is performed inside. Working hours may fluctuate based on scheduling needs. On call hours are necessary.
