POSITION PURPOSE:

Under general supervision in an outpatient clinical setting, the Medical Assistant Floater provides initial patient triage, registration, and administrative services, assists with direct patient care, and performs specialized medical procedures of a routine nature, as dictated by established clinical protocol.  This position will perform Medical Assistant duties on a floating basis, rotating between Specialty Services (Functional Medicine clinic as the primary location Monday – Thursday or as the schedule permits and changes), Also floating as needed to Homer Medical Center and the Orthopedic/Specialty clinic and other areas as assigned by the Specialty Services Clinic Manager or their designee(s).  The MA relays pertinent information to the Specialty Services Manager, providers and staff as directed.

 

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and be a high school graduate or have a GED.
  • This position requires knowledge of clinical standards, practices and procedures.
  • Minimum of 1 year of office/clerical experience with one year in a healthcare related field is preferred.
  • Prior or current CNA and/or EMT-1, Health Care Specialist, or Medical Assistant certification is preferred, but may be substituted with appropriate experience in a healthcare setting.
  • One to two years of previous clinical/medical/hospital experience desired.
  • Certification as Medical Assistant helpful.
  • Should possess a working knowledge and use of Medical Terminology.
  • Have knowledge of Medical Records/Health Information Management requirements.
  • This position requires receptionist skills, including the ability to deal courteously and tactfully with patients, their families, and facility personnel both in person and by phone.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, understand chart flow, record keeping, order entry and scheduling.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team environment.

 

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Assist with direct patient care and related tasks; check in patients, assist in obtaining patient histories, take vital signs, prepare charts, and assist with medical examinations.
  2. Reviews patient charts for physician orders and documents, scans or inserts the information to the appropriate areas per policies, procedures and protocols.  Obtains all needed signatures, copies of insurance cards, and any other information necessary to ensure successful charge capture by SPH.  Scheduling, obtaining insurance preauthorization and registering patients may be required.
  3. Perform routine specialized procedures as needed.
  4. Counsels patients’ pre-procedure, testing, or pre-operatively completing all forms necessary to ensure positive outcome and payment of services.
  5. Complete preventatives and callbacks as necessary.
  6. Contact patients post testing or procedures with provider recommendations and follow up schedule.
  7. Educate and advise patients on specified medical issues within established parameters.
  8. Set up rooms for physician use.
  9. Cleaning of rooms & equipment after each use.
  10. Performs other duties within scope of practice and to the expectations of the Clinic Manager.
  11. Assist with patient care consistent with the department needs, and at the direction of the clinic manager and providers. Receive, register, schedule, and direct patients and visitors as appropriate.
  12. Schedule and monitor patient appointments; may coordinate routine office activities in support of unit activities.
  13. Maintain clean patient care areas.
  14. Correctly and professionally instruct and inform patients pertaining to Functional Medicine education material and test kits.
  15. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by clinic manager or provider.
