POSITION PURPOSE
Under the general direction of their supervisor, the Self-Pay Collector will provide quality customer service while performing collection of assigned outstanding, aged account balances.  The incumbent will maintain exceptional service and integrity with customers through accurate, timely, relevant, and quality work efforts of all inventory assigned to the self-pay billing revenue cycle.  The Self-Pay Collector must have knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance billing policies and procedures along with legal responsibilities related to billing and collection practices to include a thorough understanding of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.  The Self-Pay Collector must be able to communicate effectively and pleasantly both over the phone and in person.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 2-3 years collection experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment/handle large volume of calls
  • Knowledge of government and commercial insurance plans and how patient liability amounts are determined.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required

NOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
The  position requires the incumbent possess the minimum of a high school diploma and two to three years of experience in computerized hospital patient accounts is preferred. Annual education to obtain and maintain Certified Application Counselor and Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility status is required. This individual should be able to operate such general office machines as a typewriter, computer, adding machine by touch, photocopier, FAX and multi-line switchboard phone system.  The Self-Pay Collector must be familiar with Word, legal forms, legal proceedings, and medical billing and insurance practices.  This position must present a professional appearance, deal courteously and respectfully with patients, be able to learn and follow established departmental policies, be able to perform work with attention to detail, be able to maintain accurate records and be able to contribute to a pleasant, positive working environment.

ENVIRONMENT:
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28 bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska.  The Patient Financial Services Department provides reception, registration, billing, collections and receipting functions for the hospital and Long Term Care.  The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained.  The position requires a moderate amount of mobility.  The ability to reason, speak and have basic manual dexterity is essential.  Physical demands are moderate and may include sitting, or standing for prolonged periods, walking, stooping and occasional lifting.  Psychological demands can be very strenuous.  Most work is performed inside and the work is generally of a positive nature.
