POSITION PURPOSE:
Position is under the immediate supervision of the laboratory director and when appropriate under the supervision of clinical laboratory scientists.
Scope of responsibility:
- To perform phlebotomy and clerical duties as an employee of South Peninsula Hospital, with either laboratory or clinical home base. The phlebotomist will be trained to provide coverage in both the laboratory and clinical setting. Assignment of the phlebotomist/clerk to a base when staffing is low will be determined by the Department Availability Roster for each base in accordance with CBA guidelines. Home base will be determined by majority of hours scheduled in the home base.
- The clerk/phlebotomist is involved in pre-analytical, limited-analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing in the laboratory or clinical base.
- Prior experience in Safety Officer or similar role preferred.
- Safety Officer Duties:
- Monitor adherence to safety protocols and regulations regarding hazardous materials, biological agents, radiation safety, and waste management.
- Perform environmental rounds quarterly to identify potential safety hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Perform Safety Observation annually.
- Review and update safety procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as needed.
- Oversee the proper storage, labeling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
- Assess chemical hazards and recommend appropriate controls to mitigate risks.
- Investigate laboratory accidents, near misses, and spills to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Document and report all safety incidents to relevant authorities, including management and the Safety Committee.
- Participate in developing and maintaining laboratory emergency response plans.
- Ensure lab personnel are trained on emergency procedures, including spill containment, fire evacuation, and first aid.
- Active member of the hospital Safety Committee.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Phlebotomy certification (ASCP) or equivalent preferable
- Phlebotomy experience across the age span; neonates to geriatrics
- Moderate knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology
- Excellent customer relations skills
- Excellent verbal, written and clerical skills
- Computer skills in Hospital & Laboratory Information Systems, Excel and Word
The South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22 bed Acute care hospital and 28 bed long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well maintained. The position requires a moderate amount of mobility. The ability to reason, speak and have basic manual dexterity is essential. There may be the need to attend meetings and classes both inside and outside of the Hospital setting. Physical demands are moderate and may include sitting for prolonged periods, standing, walking, stooping and occasional lifting. Psychological demands can be strenuous. Most work is performed inside and the work is generally of a positive nature.
