POSITION PURPOSE:

The Plumber position works as a member of the Engineering team who is responsible for the operation, maintenance and preventive maintenance of the plumbing and some mechanical equipment associated with the physical plant such as hot water heaters, hydronic systems, pumps, irrigation systems, gas plumbing, some refrigeration and back flow preventers.  This position also has considerable responsibility for repair and maintenance of the campus buildings, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Plumber performs a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, work in plumbing, painting, electrical work, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics, heating and ventilation systems, boilers and steam systems and a broad-spectrum of maintenance duties to meet the needs of the facility.  The plumber shall carry out regular maintenance of plumbing systems, perform installation of plumbing systems, inspect previously installed plumbing systems, and perform repairs to previously installed systems. This position does not have responsibility for most patient care equipment, which is the responsibility of the Bio-Medical/Facilities Engineer. The position is supervised by the Facilities Director.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  2. Must possess a high school diploma or GED with either a college or vocational maintenance degree and 5 years hospital maintenance experience, or 5-7 years maintenance experience in a related field.
  3. Must possess a Certified Alaska State Plumbers license.
  4. Must possess licensing and/or certification in at least two or more of the following areas, including but not limited to: hydraulics, pneumatics, back flow Assembly and Tester or hazardous waste handling.
  5. Must be able to read, write and understand English; follow verbal and written instructions.
  6. Must be able to pass a Job Function Test and meet the physical demands of the job.
  7. Must have basic knowledge and skill of blueprints, electronics, electrical circuits, hydraulics, pneumatics, plumbing, new and old construction, boiler systems, refrigeration plumbing.
  8. Must have knowledge in the care and use of a variety of hand and power tools.
  9. Must have basic computer skills.
  10. Must have good communication and listening skills.
  11. Must have good organizational and decision-making skills with the ability to set appropriate priorities
  12. Must be able to perform work with attention to detail, be flexible in work assignments and work competently in stressful situations.

ENVIRONMENT:        

South Peninsula Hospital is a 22-bed Critical Access Hospital with an attached 28 bed Long Term Care Unit and a nine bed designated Level IV Trauma Center. The facility also includes several clinics and office buildings located off the main campus. The plumber may work in all of these areas to maintain the buildings and associated equipment. The working environment while generally pleasant requires that this person be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb ladders and occasionally crawl through and work in tight, sometimes dirty spaces. This position participates in the handling of hazardous materials and working with potentially dangerous equipment that requires knowledge of safety programs such as lockout/tagout, and compliance with numerous regulatory guidelines for safe work practices. While performing the duties of this position, there may be exposure to inclement weather, wet and/or humid conditions, high temperatures, fumes, dust particles and chemicals. Working hours are usually during the-day, but may fluctuate, depending on various situations and work load. This position is routinely scheduled for Engineer on-call duty and may be called to work at any hour of the day or night to deal with maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors and staff.
