RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide individualized nursing care during labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care in a private suite setting.
- Support and educate patients and families through the childbirth experience, including newborn feeding practices.
- Promote skin-to-skin contact, rooming-in, and breastfeeding support per established best practices.
- Monitor and assess maternal and fetal well-being throughout the perinatal period.
- Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and support staff to ensure safe, respectful, and compassionate care.
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care using the nursing process and evidence-based practices.
- Develop and revise patient care plans based on ongoing assessment and patient/family input.
- Perform admission assessments, skin assessments, and regular documentation of patient conditions.
- Administer medications, IVs, and perform specialized procedures such as wound care, catheterization, and post-operative support.
- Respond appropriately to patient status changes and coordinate care with physicians and support staff.
- Supervise and delegate tasks to Certified Nurse Assistants and other support staff.
- Function as charge nurse as assigned and support the orientation of new staff and student nurses.
- Support safety initiatives, infection control protocols, and hospital quality improvement activities.
- This position floats to the Acute Care department as needed
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- An active Registered Nurse license with the State of Alaska is required.
- Current BLS and ACLS, and NRP certifications.
- PALS required within 6 months (specialty certifications required for OB/ICU roles).
- Prior labor & delivery or mother-baby unit experience preferred.
- Knowledge of evidence-based infant feeding practices and baby-friendly hospital initiatives.
- Ability to educate patients in newborn care and breastfeeding assistance.
- Strong communication, documentation, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to manage rapidly changing patient conditions and emergency situations effectively.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and charting systems.
- Leadership capabilities to function as a charge nurse or mentor when needed.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform moderate physical activity including walking, standing, and sitting.
ENVIRONMENT:
The Family Birthing Center at South Peninsula Hospital offers a serene and personalized birth experience in private Labor-Delivery-Recovery suites equipped with whirlpool tubs and sleeper sofas for family support. Nurses work in a collaborative setting where infants are encouraged to remain with the mother 24/7, and families receive extensive education and care.
Staff may encounter job hazards such as exposure to infectious diseases, physical strain during labor support, and needlestick injuries, but comprehensive protocols and safety measures are in place.
