POSITION PURPOSE: 
This position assesses, plans and implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development.   This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgement and nursing skills necessary to assess data, plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical developmental age of assigned patients.   To provide indirect and direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric patient populations, in the perioperative setting as a valued team member and patient advocate.   The PAT process includes many aspects of preparing patients for surgery.  Perioperative duties include, but are not limited to, being responsible for communicating with patients, surgical staff, anesthesia providers, surgeons, and other medical providers and office personnel to gather and communicate information to ensure patients and all pertinent medical history and paperwork are prepared for day of surgery.  The PAT RN needs strong clinical assessment skills and the ability to maintain efficiency while seeing to patients’ comfort and well-being. They are responsible for updating patient charts and documents and informing and educating patients about surgeries.  This work includes a significant amount of time conducting patient interviews and giving instructions via telephone and computer work spanning multiple computer programs.  Communication is paramount to successful preparation of the patient for surgery and completion of the PAT process.  

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: 
Preoperative and PAT experience is required.  They must maintain BLS and ACLS certification, must be committed to patient safety and possess keen observation and assessment skills.  ICU and/or Operating Room experience is highly useful and recommended.  Two years of acute care nursing experience is preferred.  Must be a licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.  The RN must be able to deal effectively and quickly in highly emergent situations, as well as maintain composure in dealing with all clientele involved in the Pre-op arena.  They must be able to teach, start IV’s and demonstrate effective people skills.  He/she will embrace, support and adopt evidence-based care standards and continuing education that ensures quality improvements and patient safety regulatory requirements for best practices and licensure.  Accesses and reads practice policies.
 
JOB CRITERIA:

  1. Active RN license in the State of Alaska
  2. Current ACLS and BLS
  3. Experience in PAT/Pre-operative nursing
  4. PALS certification required within 6 months of hire
  5. Willingness to work flexible hours
  6. Willingness to float/cross-train to other areas within department is encouraged 
  7. Demonstrates excellent observation and documentation skills
  8. Demonstrates excellence in working with client population
  9. Demonstrates ability to provide excellent customer service 
  10. Willingness to assist in special projects as assigned
  11. Demonstrates full understanding of patient safety and privacy rights
  12. Demonstrates ability to maintain critical skills under extreme duress
  13. Team player

ENVIRONMENT: 

South Peninsula Hospital is a 22 bed critical access hospital (CAH) located on the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula.  There is a 28 bed long term care facility attached to the hospital.
