PURPOSE:  The Sleep Technician documents, performs and scores in-patient and out-patient sleep studies (diagnostic, therapeutic, split night, MSLT, MWT, home, pediatric to include seizure montage) throughout the night or day, collects EEG’s and performs MA duties for specialty services clinics as assigned.  The technician relays pertinent information to the Specialty Services  Manager.

NATURE AND SCOPE:  The Sleep Technician reports to the Specialty Services Manager.  This individual works with the Specialty Services  manager and medical directors for each modality to assure all pertinent information has been obtained and is available for collection, analysis and interpretation of the studies and clinics. 

ENVIRONMENTThe Sleep Center is located inside the hospital. .  It is a 2 bed sleep lab located within the hospital building  in Homer, Alaska.  The Specialty Services clinics are located on campus and off campus. The working environment is quiet and clean and equipment is well maintained.  The Sleep Technician may be exposed to chemical vapors, infectious agents including blood borne pathogens.  Generally physical demands are light and work is performed inside in a controlled environment.  Work hours are varied, and may be on-call, as needed.  The sleep technician schedule is typically a 10-12 hour night shift but may vary and the technician is usually the only staff scheduled for a shift.  The EEG/MA  hours may vary from early morning to evening as appropriate and assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  2. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  3. Maintains current BCLS certification.
  4. This position prefers the technician possess the credential RPSGT or CPSGT by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists OR RST by the American Board of Sleep Medicine OR RRT-SDS OR CRT-SDS from the National Board of Respiratory Care.  If the technician DOES NOT hold the credential of RPSGT, CPSGT, RST, RRT-SDS or CRT-SDS, the technician must complete all eligibility requirements and obtain the CPSGT credential within 6 months and the RPSGT credential within 18 months of hire date OR the RST credential within 12 months OR if the technician holds the RRT or CRT credential only and not the CPSGT, RPSGT, RST and SDS, they must obtain the CPSGT within 6 months and the RPSGT within 18 months OR RST OR SDS credential within 12 months of hire.   If the technician holds only the CPSGT credential, the RPSGT credential must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
  5. EEG experience is preferred.
  6. MA, EMT or equivalent medical experience is preferred.
  7. This individual must possess the ability to sufficiently schedule, collect and monitor sleep studies, EEG’s according to professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulation.
  8. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure and have the ability to calculate figures with accuracy. The position requires understanding of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. 
  9. Is professional, exercises sound judgment, and utilizes appropriate assessment skills.

  11. Tech I – No credential held in sleep OR only holds the CPSGT sleep credential.
Tech II – RPSGT, RST, RRT-SDS, CRT-SDS
