POSITION PURPOSE:
Speech and Language Pathologists identify and treat communication and swallowing impairments. A Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) seeks to improve communication skills through vocal exercises and cognitive therapies. Patients undergoing treatment with a SLP may have an articulation, language, fluency, resonance or mechanical disorder which prevents them from being understood, understanding others, or swallowing and managing oral intake. The SLP works with hospital outpatients, inpatients, Home Health, and residents of the hospital Long Term Care unit, according to the professional standards of the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA).
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
The Speech Language Pathologist position requires a degree from an accredited university recognized by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). Three to five years of experience is preferred. Current national certification (C.C.C.) through the ASHA and American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification are mandatory.
ENVIRONMENT:
South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 22-bed Acute Care Critical Access Hospital and 28-bed Long Term Care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula in South-Central Alaska. The Hospital Clinic will accommodate outpatient specialty provider services, and will provide reception, registration, pre-authorization, collections, and receipting functions for the clinic on behalf of the hospital. The working environment is generally pleasant, clean and well-maintained. The position requires a moderate amount of mobility. The ability to reason, speak and have basic manual dexterity is essential. Physical demands are moderate and may include sitting, standing or sitting for prolonged periods, walking, stooping and occasional lifting. Psychological demands can be very strenuous. Most work is performed inside and the work is generally of a positive nature. Working hours may fluctuate based on the demands of the work
